About Cheryl Poulin

Cheryl Poulin July 2023

If you've ever wondered why losing weight seems so much harder than it should be... why you can be determined in the morning and desperately craving something by afternoon... or why you seem to know exactly what you should do but can't seem to make it stick, you're not alone.

I've been there.

My own struggles with weight and food eventually led me down a very different path. I discovered that what I had always thought was simply a lack of willpower was far more complicated. I began learning about insulin resistance, carbohydrate metabolism, food addiction, addictive eating and the powerful relationship between the foods we eat and the way we feel.

The more I learned, the more I realized how much of the conventional advice I'd been given simply didn't explain what was happening.

That's what led me to create NoSugarCoach.com.

My goal is simple: to help you understand the WHY behind what you're experiencing so you can make informed decisions about what works for you.

“Oh... THAT'S why I've been struggling.”

That moment of understanding can be incredibly powerful.

Why I Do This

For years, I believed that successful weight loss was mostly about having enough discipline.

Eat less. Exercise more. Try harder. Start again Monday.

If you've lived with weight problems, you probably know how that story goes.

You do everything you're told to do. You lose some weight. You get hungry. You get tired of being hungry. You eventually eat the foods you've been trying so hard to avoid.

And then comes the guilt. The shame. The feeling that you've failed again.

I know that cycle because I've lived it.

My journey eventually led me to discover that food isn't simply about calories or willpower. For some people, particular foods can have a powerful effect on appetite, cravings, reward, behaviour and the way we think about eating.

And that changed the way I looked at everything.

It's More Than What You Eat

One of the things I've learned is that telling someone what to eat isn't enough. You need to understand why.

Why are you hungry all the time? Why do certain foods seem impossible to resist? Why does eating one cookie sometimes turn into eating the whole package?

Why can you be perfectly committed to your plan and then suddenly find yourself standing in the kitchen eating something you never intended to eat? Why does weight loss sometimes become harder as we get older?

And why do some people seem to be able to eat foods that send someone else completely off the rails?

These are the questions that fascinate me.

I don't believe that every person needs the same diet, the same strategy or the same solution.

But I do believe that knowledge gives you choices.

The more you understand about your body, your metabolism, your relationship with food and your own eating patterns, the better equipped you are to make decisions that actually work for you.

How I Teach

My approach is practical, encouraging and rooted in education.

There is an enormous amount of nutrition and health information on the internet. Some of it is excellent. Some of it is outdated. Some of it is wildly oversimplified.

And some of it is just plain confusing.

I spend a great deal of time researching, reading and sorting through that information so I can help make it easier to understand.

I don't want you to simply memorize a list of foods you're “allowed” to eat.

I want you to understand what you're doing and why you're doing it.

Here you'll find information about:

  • Low-carbohydrate and ketogenic eating
  • Sugar and carbohydrate addiction
  • Food addiction and addictive eating
  • Insulin resistance and metabolic health
  • Appetite, hunger and cravings
  • Weight loss and weight maintenance
  • Fasting and other metabolic strategies
  • The science behind different approaches to eating
  • Practical strategies for making changes and staying the course

And when something doesn't make sense, I want you to be able to ask questions. Because learning shouldn't feel like punishment.

A Little More About Me

I'm a lifelong learner.

Once something catches my interest, I want to understand it. I read. I research. I listen to experts. I question things. And then I try to figure out how to explain what I've learned in a way that an ordinary person can actually understand.

That's probably why NoSugarCoach.com has grown into much more than a coaching website.

It has become my place to gather information, share what I'm learning and help people navigate the often-confusing world of nutrition, weight loss and food.

I'm also a creative person, so perhaps it's not surprising that I enjoy looking at problems from different angles and finding new ways to explain things.

I don't believe health education has to be dry, intimidating or filled with jargon.

Sometimes the best way to understand something complicated is simply to have someone sit beside you and say,

“Okay. Let's figure this out together.”

Who I Help

NoSugarCoach.com is for people who are tired of starting over.

Some are trying to lose weight. Some are struggling with sugar or processed foods. Some suspect they may have a problem with food addiction. Some are dealing with insulin resistance or metabolic health concerns.

And some simply know that the way they're eating isn't working for them anymore and want to understand what their options are.

You don't have to have everything figured out before you arrive here.

You don't have to be perfect. And you certainly don't have to know all the answers.

You just have to be willing to learn.

Let's Figure This Out Together

Whether you're brand new to low-carb eating, trying to quit sugar, struggling with cravings, curious about food addiction, or simply trying to make sense of all the conflicting information you've been hearing, I'm glad you're here.

Take your time. Explore the articles. Read the research. Learn something new. Ask questions.

And if you need more personal support, there are coaching and counseling options available too.

My hope is that NoSugarCoach.com becomes a place you can return to whenever you need information, encouragement or simply a reminder that you're not the only person struggling with this.

Knowledge is powerful.

And sometimes understanding why is the first step toward finally being able to change what.
